The Northeast 400 is a modern American motorsailer. Modern building materials, powerful yet light diesel engines, and computer generated underwater shapes have produced a boat that is fast and fun to sail. To provide the Northeast 400 with trawler speeds under power and high-performance under sail, a new hull had to be designed. She is naturally fine forward and long on the water. Her flat run blends into extremely wide sections aft. These generous sections provide outstanding stability under sail, yet they prevent squatting, pitching and rolling under power. The generous aft sections provide for a large uncluttered cockpit. An essential design aim was to enter the boat through a transom door. This works perfectly. Boarding from a dock or a dinghy, it is unnecessary to climb over the side of the boat. From the swim platform, through the cockpit and into the main cabin is all one level. No more climbing or descending stairs. There are three helm seats. A large self-contained propane locker properly drains overboard. The cockpit table provides a setting for four. A wine cooler, hand rails, foot rails and a fold away garbage bin are also provided. Sail lockers are large enough for bicycles. Her 100 hp engine provides cruising speeds of 8 to 9 knots with plenty in reserve. This combination of reserve power and hull form allows this design to prevail at speeds of 7.5 to 8 knots in awful conditions. Under sail she has been referred to as very competitive, with 7 knots of upwind performance in a proper sailing breeze. Handsome motorsailers have been designed and built in the past, but they neither sailed nor powered well. These boats were heavy and simply failed to perform. This is not the case today. The Northeast 400 is a boat that is fast, fun to sail and far exceeds all previous efforts.
