The Haven Class Sloop is a modified version on Nathanael Herreshoff`s deep-drafted 12 1⁄2 sloop designed and built as a production boat in the early 1900`s. The Herreshoff 12 1⁄2 is one of the most admired and well-loved boats ever designed. It remains an active class boat today. The Haven Class, like the Herreshoff, is 12 1⁄2 feet on the waterline and 16 feet overall. Major modifications include the addition of a centerboard and slight widening of the beam. The advantages of the Haven Class over the Herreshoff 12 1⁄2 are obvious; she is more easily trailered and is able to be taken into shoal water. In terms of sailing ability and aesthetics the Haven Class is virtually identical to her predecessor. Joel White retained the fine, elegant lines so characteristic of N. Herreshoff. He also carefully redesigned the hull so that the much admired attributes of the original Herreshoff 12 1⁄2 (balance, stability, speed and responsiveness) remained unaffected by the reduction in draft. The result is a versatile daysailer that is ideal for racing, family sailing and coastal exploring.

The Haven Class is built of cedar planking over oak. The fore and after decks are made of marine plywood covered with epoxy resin and xynole. The forward bulkhead is watertight for added safety. Varnished mahogany trim and side benches enhance the overall beauty of the Haven Class design. Mahogany coamings surround the cockpit and provide an unusually comfortable backrest. Distinctive bronze hardware and the Herreshoff molded sheer planks add to the special appeal of this craft.
